  1. I was just reflecting on the differences in the needs of clients in first sessions. When I review past clients I’ve had, I see a pattern of for whom it is important to know about me or any stories outside of themselves. The pattern is that the more borderline a client, the less they have any interest in anything outside of their own story. For those who fit this diagnosis, my showing up, listening, witnessing with my full attention for an hour seems to be what helps them most. Tho it in no way seems “collaborative” to me, I see my role as being a positive attachment figure who can give them positive regard where that has been missing. These clients come back again and again, and while I personally question what I am doing for them, they believe they get great benefit. I just listen, maybe make one comment or critique at the end.
